Everything, starting from Satoshi Nakamoto's white paper…
Published in 2008, the Bitcoin whitepaper by Satoshi Nakamoto introduced a peer-to-peer electronic cash system that requires no trusted intermediaries. It outlines how proof-of-work and a chained structure prevent double spending and enable secure, low-cost, and tamper-resistant global value transfer. Technically, economically, and in terms of governance, the design is internally consistent and complete.

The Bitcoin whitepaper was first published on October 31, 2008, to the cryptography mailing list at http://metzdowd.com, and later reposted by Satoshi Nakamoto on the P2PFoundation website.
In our view, the whitepaper marks the starting point of consensus: if you want others to follow, you must clearly articulate your vision—a rule deeply rooted in hacker and computer culture. Bitcoin begins with “bit,” and its emphasis is on bits first; only after bits come coins.
https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin
The Bitcoin source code was originally written in C++ by Satoshi Nakamoto, the author of the Bitcoin whitepaper. It integrates core components such as proof-of-work mining, the blockchain data structure, the UTXO transaction model, peer-to-peer networking, and a scripting system.
On January 8, 2009, Satoshi Nakamoto announced the release of Bitcoin software version 0.1 on the cryptography mailing list, marking the official launch of the Bitcoin network.
Currently, the code is hosted on GitHub and is freely accessible, allowing anyone to download it and run it on their own computer. https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin

When it comes to GitHub and open-source code, its roots can be traced back to the very early days of the internet. Open source is not just a development model, but a spirit. The emergence of Bitcoin is a continuation and evolution of this open, shared ethos.
Hackers change the world.

The open-source ethos is the core soul of the computing world. It advocates knowledge freedom, code sharing, collaborative innovation, and community self-governance: anyone is free to use, study, modify, and distribute software, and any improvement should be contributed back to the community. It is grounded in the belief that collective effort outperforms isolated control—using transparency, openness, and decentralization to free technology from single-vendor dominance, accelerate its evolution, and benefit humanity at large, as exemplified by Linus Torvalds and the creation of Linux.
